Will my 7 yr old cat attack our kitten?
Both are female, the kitten runs up to the cat to play and the cat hisses and acts like she will attack her. We try to keep them separated but the kitten has run over to the cat several times. I am worried about the kitten’s safety. And I am afraid the cat won’t adjust to having another cat in the home. Any advice or suggestions? The 7 yr old cat did hiss and claw me when I tried to get between them. I am not fond of being attacked by my own cat.
All right, until you got the kitten, your older cat was supreme ruler. Now, there is an energetic furball running around, and she is not pleased.
Hissing is a way of training, as mother cats train their kittens by hissing at them. So she is telling the kitten to “go away”. And kittens tend to be fearless, or don’t understand why another cat won’t simply “love” them. After all, they know they are so cute.
If your older cat wanted to do something bad to the kitten, it would have already happened. What will happen is as she learns that hissing is not making the kitten go away, she will come to an understanding that the kitten is here to stay, and she had better get used to it.
A mistake you made was getting physically between them, so you got clawed. Usually words, or perhaps a squirt bottle is all you want to put between two cats who are in a dispute.
Give your older cat love and attention, as she may feel she is being shut out. After all, before the kitten, she was the center of attention.
Time will solve a lot of the issues. And while you may not think so, a second kitten would also work. That way the two kittens will devote all their energies on each other, allowing your older cat to watch and adjust.
